Recreation Sites and Trails BC is proposing a seasonal ban on camping and motorized use at Brandywine Meadows, citing grizzly bear habitat. Rather than investing in bear-safe infrastructure (food caches, managed access, designated sites), it's a blanket prohibition with little public notice and no meaningful community consultation.
Access in the Sea to Sky corridor is already shrinking. Closing Brandywine won't reduce pressure. It will push people to less-managed sites. Public comments are due June 21st, 2026.

Continued recreational access to Brandywine
Dear Jeremy Valeriote, Minister Davidson, and Minister Kang, I am writing to oppose the proposed prohibition of summer camping in the Brandywine Meadows area, which has been presented with little public notice and no meaningful consultation. Brandywine Meadows is a high-value recreational area with a long history of public use. Recreational access in the Sea to Sky region has been continuously reduced over the years, while population and demand have continued to increase. Further restricting camping at Brandywine would place more pressure on the limited remaining backcountry areas. Before proceeding, I ask that the Province provide the data supporting this restriction, including any documented human-bear conflict related to camping in the area, and whether there has been significant effort to educate or minimize human-bear conflict for the rec site. I am also concerned that there has been no meaningful consultation with local users. Rather than a blanket seasonal prohibition, I encourage the Province to consult with the recreation community and consider management-based solutions such as bear-safe food storage, waste management, designated camping areas, and education.
